Episode 7: Changing Keys

by Melissa at 3/17/2009 11:00:00 AM

Episode 7:  Changing Keys

Billy McLaughlin and Director, Suzanne Jurva, were the guests on Episode 7 where they talked about their upcoming documentary, Changing Keys - Billy McLaughlin and the Mysteries of Dystonia.  This documentary follows Billy, five-time MN Music Award winning guitarist who began having unexplainable muscle spasms in his fretboard arm and hand at the height of his career. In 2001, Mayo Clinic confirmed McLaughlin's opponent - an incurable neuro-muscular disorder called focal dystonia. After years of countless therapies, McLaughlin was forced to give up his life's passion playing solo guitar and abruptly disappeared from sight of his national fan-base. Five years in the making, this documentary chronicles McLaughlin's unlikely attempt to re-claim his career by re-training himself to become a left-handed guitarist and delves into the scientific mysteries of dystonia. The film delivers a story about determination, persistence and personal triumph wrapped in the exquisite music of this innovative and newly left-handed guitarist.  For more information, visit www.billymacmusic.com.

I not only love Taylor Swift’s music, but I also love her success story.  She’s a teenager who has become a top country music artist because she followed her dream and never gave up.

You can read her amazing success story on her website: www.TaylorSwift.com or you can watch a clip from the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Overcoming Obstacles

by Melissa at 10/27/2008 2:07:00 PM

Here's an extraodinary story about a man who truly knows what it means to overcome obstacles and to live your dreams.  Patrick Henry Hughes was born with a genetic disorder that left him physically disabled and without eyes.  He has since gone on to become an accomplished pianist, singer and trumpeter, who is currently a member of his college marching band.

He recently wrote a book, I Am Potential: Eight Lessons on Living, Loving, and Reaching Your Dreams, along with Bryant Stamford and his father, Patrick John Hughes.  From his book description: "In I Am Potential, Hughes recounts the eight critical lessons he has learned that are at the heart of his success, including “When Life Gives You Lemons, Accept Them and Be Grateful” and “Do All You Can to Change What You Can.” Uplifting and revealing, I Am Potential is remarkably inspirational for anyone facing challenges in their own life."
